About the Toyota Alphard
Over the last two decades, the Toyota Alphard has been one of the most desired 8-seater large luxury minivans on Kenyan roads. It was first introduced in 2002 to compete directly against the similarly-sized Nissan Elgrand.
The Alphard is currently in its third generation, and it also inspired the introduction of its Toyota Vellfire sibling in 2008. The first generation, known as AH10, was in production between 2002 and 2008, while the second-generation AH20 models were produced between 2008 and 2015. The AH30 third-generation Alphard models came into the market in 2015.
So why should you import a Toyota Alphard to Kenya instead of the other large minivans on the market? Read on to find out.
What Are the Main Features of the Toyota Alphard?
The Toyota Alphard has a simple box-like exterior with elegant styling cues on its front and rear. The third-generation AH30 models feature a vast chrome-plated grille that exudes luxury and sophistication. Most Alphard models also feature double sliding doors, alloy rims, fog lights; the higher grades may also feature sunroofs/moonroofs.
The interior of the Toyota Alphard is arguably its most significant selling point. This vehicle offers a refined and comfortable interior equipped with high-end comfort and convenience features, including heated and cooled seats, automatic climate control, executive reclining 2nd-row lounge seats with footrests, interior ambient lighting, a premium audio system, and much more. The Alphard is one of the few vehicles on our roads that can be configured to provide conference seating at the back (by adjusting the 2nd-row seats to face backward).
How Spacious Is the Toyota Alphard?
Interior space is one of the Toyota Alphard’s strong suits. All three rows offer more than enough headroom, legroom, and shoulder room for tall or plus-size passengers. The 2nd-row seats can even be slid backward or reclined to increase seating comfort. The Alphard is available in 7- or 8-seater configurations. The 7-seater models offer the greatest 2nd-row comfort because they feature two large 2nd-row executive chairs.
This van also offers several storage bins that you can use to store different things, e.g., a glovebox, a center console storage bin, door pockets, and many more. This van can hold even up to three medium-sized suitcases at the back when all three rows of seats are up. You can get even more cargo space by folding down the third-row chairs and sliding forward the second-row seats.
Is the Toyota Alphard Fuel-Efficient?
The 2nd and 3rd-generation used Toyota Alphard models for sale in Kenya may have FWD or 4WD, and they may be had with any of these engine options: a 2.4L 2AZ-FE 14 engine, a 3.5L 2GR-FE V6 engine, or a 2.4/2.5 L 2AR-FXE I4 hybrid engine. Expect the non-hybrid 2.4L engine to return a fuel economy of up to 12.0km/L and the 2.4L hybrid engine to deliver up to 19.4km/L. The 3.5L V6 engine is thirstier, with an average fuel economy of up to 9.5km/L. These engines may pair with a 6-speed automatic, a 7-speed Super CVT-I, or a CVT Automatic.
What Is the Ground Clearance of the Toyota Alphard?
Most Toyota Alphard models have a ground clearance of 157mm, which is relatively lower than the recommended ground clearance for Kenyan roads, i.e., 165mm. This means that you might need to look for ways to increase the van’s ride height to make it easier for it to clear speed bumps.
Is It Easy to Find Spare Parts of a Used Toyota Alphard in Kenya?
Yes. The Alphard is a popular vehicle that has been on the Kenyan market for quite a while, so it should be relatively easy to find Toyota Alphard spare parts in most major towns in Kenya.
Is the Toyota Alphard Reliable? Does It Have a Good Resale Value?
The Alphard is renowned for its reliability. Its engines are durable workhorses that rarely develop problems when properly maintained, so expect the Toyota Alphard to serve you reliably, racking up thousands of kilometers without a problem. Its resale value is also good.
The Toyota Alphard is an excellent option if you’re looking for a luxurious, comfortable, versatile, and spacious van in Kenya. However, it is pricier than its direct competitors, so you may have to part with more to get it.
